As a transwoman housed in a California prison, I wanted to give not just the transwomen here a group to be part of, but the LGBTQ population as well. I came up with an idea of a creativity group. The group is based solely on the LGBTQ population, The name of the group is PACE: Positive Actions Create Everything.
So PACE has been created and approved here at CMF [CA Medical Facility]. The group will be facilitated by myself and a staff member at CMF. We will meet weekly on Thursdays. The group will pick a subject and from that subject, each person will create a poem, essay or art about the subject chosen. An example would be “What does equality look like on paper?”
The pieces from the group would then be sent to the many LGBT centers throughout the United States as well as sent to LGBT publications such as Stiletto, UltraViolet, Hearts on a Wire, Black and Pink and Flying Over the Walls. Also, the pieces would be sent to other publications to support them and their readers, such as Prison Health News, The Fire Inside, The Beat Within, The Sun Magazine and Prison Radio which are all allowed by the CDCR [CA Dept. of Corrections and Rehabilitation].
My vision is to keep the inside LGBTQ population connected with the outside community so we can be more productive now and when released back into the community. Again positive actions create everything. Anything positive can change the lives of many. That is the whole purpose of the group. We show our support for everyone.
