Awesome Alabama Amazon Workers Approach Unionization

Could Amazon workers in Alabama be the first to unionize??! In late December, Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) representatives went to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to try to get a quick union certification election, which would certify that a majority of employees at the new “Amazon Fulfillment Center” in Bessemer (Birmingham suburb) want union representation. Amazon is trying to argue that the bargaining unit there is over 3x larger than it really is, which would invalidate the Union’s petition for certification. The NLRB hearing officer will decide who’s right.

If the hearing officer rules for the union, there could be a quick certification election but Amazon will probably spend a few of its trillions on legal actions to stop it. The company will argue that it’s “protecting the franchise of thousands of workers from a predatory outside organization.” Doublespeak, thy name is Amazon. In March of this year there was a small worker walkout at the Staten Island NY facility, protesting the lack of protective gear but management handled that by firing key leader Chris Smalls. Sacramento CA has also been busy organizing as part of Amazonians United (AU). In 2019 employee Sandra was fired for exceeding her unpaid time off by one hour. But within 24 hours of AU Sacramento’s protest petition, she was rehired with back pay.

Solidarity Forever!

Let’s keep our eyes and hearts on Alabama workers!
